Some days feel heavier than others, and lately I’ve been reminded of how even the simplest routines can feel different depending on what life is asking of us.

Recently, my alarm went off at 4:15 a.m. more than once. One morning was for an airport run to welcome my daughter’s red-eye flight. Another was to lead an early corporate yoga session before sunrise. Both meaningful. Both early. Both leaving me a little more tired than usual.

I kept thinking I’d just “nap later.”

But here’s the honest truth—I’m not a natural napper.

My body says yes, absolutely. My mind? It turns into a busy room full of thoughts that suddenly all want attention at the same time.

That familiar “monkey mind” shows up fast.

Even as someone who teaches yoga, mindfulness, and grounding practices, I still have days where I feel tight in my body and scattered in my thoughts. It’s a quiet reminder that these practices aren’t about becoming someone who is always calm—but someone who keeps returning to calm, again and again.

On days like this, I come back to something very simple:

  • I count my breath, one inhale and one exhale at a time
  • I treat it like “counting sheep,” but slower and more intentional
  • I start at 1, then 2, then 3… not aiming for perfection, just presence
  • When my mind wanders (and it always does), I gently begin again
  • Sometimes I reach 20 breaths, sometimes 108 feels like a distant dream—and that’s okay

There’s something quietly reassuring about this practice. It doesn’t require me to be better or more focused. It just invites me back.

Back to the breath.
Back to the body.
Back to the moment I’m actually in.

And maybe that’s the real practice—not staying perfectly calm, but noticing when we’ve drifted and choosing, softly, to return.

If today feels like a lot for you, you’re not alone in that. Life has a way of stretching us in unexpected directions.

You don’t need to solve everything at once.

You don’t need to feel fully grounded before you begin.

You can start right where you are—with one breath.

And then another.

And another.
