( It’s as easy as A,B,C!)
The holiday season may be the time to boost your joy by extending those Christmas carols, creating your very own personal cadence song simply to help you cope through dark days, financial concerns, or lack of spirit & hope.
I recently spoke at the TED-x talk held at Laurel Ridge Community College along with 11 other speakers giving the theme: innovation and impact.
As a wellness coach and yoga teacher for several decades, I dipped into my prior career of musical theater to add to this twelve-minute talk that highlights the benefits and fun of using your singing voice in an impactful way that enhances your overall wellbeing.
This talk included the audience by my asking, “Who here sings in the shower?” and nearly the entire audience raised their hand.
But what if you take that song in the shower out into your everyday life and sing while cooking, doing laundry, at work, in the grocery store and in your team-building corporate meetings to amplify your productivity?
The Helen Keller quote-” Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.” was used to remind the listeners how community matters so that we get closer to feelings of joy and diminish feelings of self-doubt.
Singing together strengthens social bonds and boosts oxytocin-the happiness hormone. Don’t worry if you don’t know the lyrics or can’t reach a note-no prior experience needed for this new..old, way of connecting. This wellness booster is as easy as A,B,C:
A – An attitude of gratitude, grateful you are alive another day so why not feel more joy by trying something innovative and fun?
B – Breathe! Singing helps you strengthen your respiratory system plus a deep exhale will release any resistance to this impactful approach to lifting your spirits.
C – Courage to try something new and let loose by laughing at what you create.Your own personal song may become your new theme song!
Using my own stories in life, I shared how the shift from a self-sabotaging thought to a lighter tune in your head can greatly improve the morale of those around you as the words you speak to yourself exude energy outwards.
As the story goes, in 1944 Private Willie Duckworth began to sing, march, and clap to encourage his WW2 comrades, who were not singing songs of joy at that time. The impact of his idea to take action for his team was so great that it is still used today for military participants to help boost morale, overcome resistance and uncertainty while building camaraderie and strengthening cardiovascular health. It is known as the Duckworth Cadence March.
Put this in your life today and reboot your head-to- toe wellness!
Begin with your simple task list, add some rhythm and clapping then feel free to move, march and own your day. Here’s an example:
I am doing dishes now
Laundry next, then feed the cows.
You may see me dance around
Who cares? I’m here and Joy is found!
Since the dawn of humanity ancient healers, called Shamans, have used music to remove disease from the body, depression from the mind and despair from the soul.
Don’t let your judgment of your voice hold you back from feeling more joy this holiday season-decide to sing every day and have fun feeling good:
one note, one breath, one day of your life at a time.
And if you need help crafting your cadence, reach out and let’s amplify your Joy!

Hi Monica! I hope you are doing well and had a successful retreat at Marriott Ranch! I met you a few years ago at the Marriott Ranch when you led a yoga class during the YRCI company retreat. I’ve been on a few company retreats at the ranch and have always loved it there and formed a great connection with Kelley. I’m no longer with YRCI and am pursuing my passions of coaching and planning Tuscany villa vacations. Like you, I’m a certified coach and I’m co-leading a yoga/wellness retreat with a friend of mine also at the Marriott Ranch. I sent you a message through Instagram but didn’t hear back from you so I thought I’d try you here.
I was wondering if you’d be willing to share any tips with me on how best to work with Kelley and the ranch to make this a successful retreat and to hear if you’ve run into any challenges in having your retreats there. If you would like to follow me on instagram I’m at together_in_tuscany. I look forward to hearing from you!
Thank you Janine!! I’m so glad we have exceeded our retreat experience together and on our own!
Happy 2026 Janine!!!! What a year we had in 2025! Such gratitude to you for the Tuscany collaboration. I know your up coming Marriott event will be a huge success and your future Italy trips fully booked!
